Delivering a Future-Ready RTO Solution for Sustainable Manufacturing

Delivering a Future-Ready RTO Solution for Sustainable Manufacturing

Background

Selig Group Logo

Selig Group is an industry-leader in innovative sealing and venting solutions that are utilised in rigid containers for markets including FMCG, healthcare and chemical. They operate globally across six sites and serve over 10,000 brands.

Spooner RTO during installation at the Selig Site

Selig Group’s Slough facility manufactures ‘induction liners’ which are foil-based seals located beneath the lids of bottles or jars, providing an airtight and tamper-evident cap. Their production involves a lamination process, and the relocation of this equipment from another Selig site to the Slough facility created the requirement for a Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) to comply with environmental legislation.

As there was never previously a requirement at this site, the installation of an RTO was a first-time introduction, and Selig needed expert guidance on how the technology could be implemented.

Challenges

In the initial assessment, Spooner sought to uncover all the key details to advise Selig on the best solution going forward.

Solution

RTO during construction at the Spooner factory

On completion of the assessment, Spooner’s Applications Engineering team identified that the best solution was a 30,000Nm³/h capacity RTO with an air-to-air heat exchanger system to deliver pre-heated air back to the laminating process, reducing energy consumption.

As the project progressed, due to a change of the RTO equipment intended position, Spooner identified that an air-to-water heat exchanger would be more suitable rather than the original air-to-air system. The project scheme was adapted accordingly, and the final solution designed to ensure the most efficient system would be delivered.

Result

The Spooner scope included full installation and commissioning of the system, with integration with the laminating process equipment key. The site aspects of the project, with the strong collaboration and partnership of Selig, progressed smoothly and production performed well from start-up.

The final RTO capacity and heat exchanger solution meant Selig would easily be able to meet current regulations, operating efficiently with current production levels, and with the capacity available in the future should they expand production and integrate further production lines.
